Project Description
This workshop is an introduction to using the principles of Biomimicry in Architecture and deriving algorithms from natural forms. Biomimetic architecture is a contemporary philosophy of architecture that seeks solutions for sustainability in nature, not by replicating the natural forms, but by understanding the rules governing them. The workshop is also an introduction to using algorithms and geometric principles in the design to optimize the design process. In this 2 day workshop, students will learn the basic principles of biomimicry and how we can emulate the principles behind these forms using digital architecture. We will start with the basic introduction of software’s like Rhinoceros and Grasshopper which act as an essential tool in implementing the design.
The brief of the workshop is to start with the basics of biomimicry principles of the selected forms like a Voronoi pattern formed in the veins of a leaf and the principles behind the spider web. Using the geometric principles behind these formations and designing a structure would be the goal of the workshop. The students will then proceed to make 3D Printing file for the same which they can print and take away at the end of the workshop.Workshop will also teach participants the use of Rhinoceros and Grasshopper as digital modelling tools, along with the conversion of the digital models for 3d printing and how it can be integrated in design, structures and architecture.

DAY 1:
Seminar – Biomimicry in Architecture
Rhinoceros and Grasshopper
_Setting up /Installations of software and relevant plugins.
_Basic introduction to Rhinoceros and Grasshopper.
Seminar – Patterns in Nature
_Using Grasshopper to generate patterns.
DAY 2:
_Seminar on Catenary Structures
_Basic introduction to Kangaroo physics plugin for generating catenary structures.
_Multiple iteration formation and selection.
_Documentation of workshop output.
Software requirement
Participants should bring their own laptop with pre-installed software.

LEAD MENTORS:
Seeja Sudhakaran (Architect)
Seeja Sudhakaran is an architect & computational designer with a keen eye for Art and Design. Being inherently interested in the smaller details in design, she experiments with product design and combines her knowledge of Parametric Design in everyday objects continually optimizing and enhancing them. A stickler for organization and order, planning is one of her strong suites. She is the co-founder of Studio Emergence, a design firm based out of Mumbai, with designers and researchers specializing in parametric design principles spread across the globe. After practicing in Mumbai for a few years, she completed her Master’s Degree in Advanced Design and Digital Architecture from Elisava (Barcelona, Spain) and was nominated for the Best Thesis award across different disciplines for her research in Gridshell and tension Structures.
Khushbu Davda (Architect)
The love of nature and being outdoors inspired Khushbu to integrate enclosed spaces with nature. With a flair for design and natural forms, biomimicry is one of her strong suits and coupled with her knowledge in Computational design she takes informed design to an advanced level. She is the co-founder of Studio Emergence and has completed her Master’s degree in Advanced Design and Digital Architecture from Elisava (Barcelona, Spain)
